FED: Baby food labels to be changed

Labels on baby food could be changed to make sure products aren't given to infants
younger than six months.

Current packaging on baby food states it's suitable for children over four months ..

but Food Standards Australia New Zealand says that's inconsistent with national health
guidelines.

The regulator says there's also evidence that introducing solids earlier limits a baby's
supply of vital breast milk .. and potentially harms the kidneys.

FSANZ says between four and six months .. human breast milk or infant formula is generally
considered sufficient to meet the iron and zinc needs of infants.

Submissions on the proposal close on September 17.
